Learning Activity Packages

Each weekly activity package will include a minimum of 3 math, 3 English, 2 science, 2 art, and 5 STEM activities, so students will have at least 3 activities to complete per weekday, though we always aim to surpass that minimum in as many subjects as possible. We are working as quickly as we can to compile additional activities so those numbers may increase over time. Every week will focus multiple activities around a single concept for each subject to allow time for in depth learning and understanding of every concept.

As often as we can in the majority of subjects, we try to use activities and hands on learning over straight up worksheets to keep learning fun and interesting. For some subjects, like English and math, some activities more closely resemble worksheets, as those are the resources we currently have available, though we are constantly working to find alternatives to add and our curriculum developer has already custom made many activities to provide additional learning options wherever possible.

Most of our activities only require the page to be printed out and it’s ready to go, or to save paper many can just be brought up on the computer screen and students can just write their answers on lined paper. Other activities only need basic supplies that most people will already have around the house, for example, small objects to use as counters for math, a pair of dice, Lego (for math as well as STEM building), Styrofoam cups, plain or coloured paper, graph paper, white glue (a couple STEM projects may require adult assistance with hot glue), scissors, markers, paint, cardboard, empty toilet paper or paper towel rolls (For STEM). Supplies needed will vary slightly depending on grade. Each activity will give a list of any needed supplies in the instructions. Our goal is for our program to be as self sufficient as possible so families don’t need to spend additional money on supplies.

The STEM activities included in your package promote critical thinking skills as well as introducing various science, math and engineering topics and concepts in a fun way. Activities can include building something that moves or flies, brain teasers or trial and error activities where students have to make adjustments and try different things to find the best result, outside the box thinking activities where the answers never the obvious choice, or building something to achieve a particular goal. We do suggest that you start saving items like cardboard boxes, paper towel and toilet paper rolls, and newspaper, as most weeks one or more activities will require these items.

Different classes, schools and school boards may have left off at varying points in the curriculum, so we are starting our curriculum at approximately the point where we guess schools would’ve gotten to and continue at a pace that will allow the remainder of the Ontario curriculum to be covered by the end of June. So depending on your child's school, there may be some overlap, but a week or two of review will only help solidify those concepts for students as they get back into a learning mindset and routine after being off school for two weeks.
