Gifted students often assimilate information and grasp new concepts very quickly, so they require a different approach to keep them challenged than just feeding them information straight up. True learning happens when students are guided but have to experiment and problem solve and try different approaches to come to the answer themselves. This is a major part of gifted education, giving students the tools they need and encouraging them to think for themselves and to draw their own conclusions.

So much of the public school system is about memorizing and repeating information back on tests, or using formulas to manipulate data in a predictable way. While sometimes this is necessary to some degree to learn the basics, at the Spaulding School of the Arts, we consider this to be just the start of a learning experience, a jumping-off point to a much more in-depth understanding.

Gifted minds are capable of so much, of unique thoughts and being able to see things from different angles, spot patterns, and use abstract thinking to understand things in new ways. This is what we encourage to truly challenge our students. Once they have a base of knowledge to draw on, we pose open-ended questions where they are free to pose new questions, theorize, and experiment to gain a deeper understanding. Instead of taking information at face value, we want our students to always question everything, to look for new ways to do things, to find unexpected outcomes and ask more questions to extend their learning, and to push the boundaries to take their learning to the next level. This is how we create great thinkers who have the potential to expand whatever field they choose as a career in the future.
