Individualized Education

A transformative individualized approach to education

Individualized Education

Individualized Education Programs

The gifted program is the most individualized and flexible education style used in the Spaulding School for the Arts. Every student is different, has different learning styles and has different strengths and those differences can be even more diverse and extreme in gifted students. In this program, we start the year with assessment tests in all of the core subjects to see what each student's working grade level is for each subject. This means a student that by age would be in grade 4 may be working at a grade 3 level in English, a grade 4 level in science and a grade 6 level in math. Gifted students often avoid or put less effort into subjects they don’t like or don’t feel they are good at but can be multiple grades ahead in subjects they do like. Our goal is to support students in subjects they find challenging to hopefully bring them up to at least their age grade level or higher, and challenge them in the subjects they excel at.

The way they complete their core subject work is also not set in stone. Some students may enjoy working quickly through units in a textbook, while others may benefit from a more step by step visual teaching style that is provided by educational apps on a tablet or laptop. Or some may not like working on the computer and prefer something more concrete and hands-on, so they may want to take advantage of activity sheets that guide them through each unit using manipulatives so they can physically see what is written on the page. One on one or small group instruction time with the teacher is of course always available to them as well. Some may prefer different options for different subjects. This style of individualized education is common to all classes within the school but is just taken to the next level in the gifted program and really allows each student to find what works best for them and what allows them to come to the greatest possible understanding of the material in the shortest time.

Now this does not mean it is a free for all. The students will fill out work tracking sheets so the teacher can see what they are completing daily and can guide students and discuss with them what has been working and what hasn’t to make recommendations on where they should go from there. Students do have a good deal of freedom in this program, however that freedom is earned and the teacher still gets the final say if something is not working. But our goal is for students to enjoy learning and to want to learn so they begin to take a greater responsibility for their learning and complete work not just because they are told they have to, but to go beyond that because they want to learn more.
